The Blue Design Summit at the forefront of the yachting industry
The Blue Design Summit kicked off with an exceptional first edition in which design, construction and the refitting of superyachts took centre stage. With 56 speakers, 70 companies involved and an impressive 850 registered to take part in the various panels, the event became a platform for renowned designers, expert craftsmen and both public and academic institutions. The Summit’s location was also no coincidence. Held in La Spezia, on Italy’s “Blue Mile”, the stretch of coast along which some of the most important names in Italian shipbuilding can be found, the backdrop was perfect to highlight the strengths and experience of a superyacht sector that sees Italy as its world leader. “This was an immensely successful first edition, one that involved the industry’s leading experts debating the strategic development of the city and confirming La Spezia’s central role on the international scene and its ability to bring together the area’s industry-leading manufacturers,” commented La Spezia Mayor Pierluigi Peracchini.
The contribution of Italian designers was essential to the event, taking to the stage to participate in constructive debates between case studies, new projects and considerations about the future trends that will define yacht design, emphasising the importance of “cross-fertilisation” between nautical design and residential architecture. The debates also touched on sustainability, a theme that aligned coincidentally with a closing event that included the launch of the Sanlorenzo 50Steel, the world’s first superyacht to feature a green methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system capable of powering zero-emission facilities onboard. The Summit also saw a significant participation of young students who for the first time were able to listen to defining designers and operators of the industry.
“The Blue Design Summit has taught us that it is possible to create a functioning system within the yachting industry,” commented La Spezia City Council Member Patrizia Saccone, “A fact clearly demonstrated by the public response to the expert insights of the various talks throughout the event, including those held by designers and shipyards. But to create a system also means to focus on training, which must be increasingly intertwined with the entrepreneurial fabric of the territory. A district of exceptional manufacturing such as La Spezia, a crown jewel upon the Blue Mile, is capable of generating a thriving labour economy and needs to able to train specific skills and specialisations.”
During the event held at Villa Marigola in Lerici, the winners of the first edition of the Miglio Blu (“Blue Mile”) Design Awards were announced before local public officials including La Spezia’s Mayor Pierluigi Peracchini and City Council Member Patrizia Saccone. The jury, made up of journalists and experts from across the sector, acknowledged the following award winners:
- the T52 by Baglietto, exterior design by Francesco Paszkowski, interior design by Margherita Casprini, for the elegance and overall coherence of the design;
- the Alchemy, by Rossinavi, exterior design by Vitruvius Yachts, interior design by Enrico Gobbi’s Team for Design, for the elegance of the external and internal forms and for the attention given to the eco-sustainability of the propulsion solution;
- the Nilaya, by Royal Huisman, exterior & interior design by Nauta Design, for the materials used in the construction of the hull and general structure;
- the Seadeck, by Azimut, exterior design by Alberto Mancini and interior design by Antonio Rodriguez and Matteo Thun, for the in-depth research into the materials used in the interior furnishings, which manage to combine recycling and sustainability with contemporary aesthetics;
- the Bolide 80 by Victory Design, exterior design by Brunello Acampora, interior design by Stefano Faggioni, for its uncompromising approach to the themes of speed and fun, while remaining within a sustainable litre/mile performance;
- the El-Iseo by Riva, designed by Officina Italiana Design di Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, a boat that elegantly interprets the modern trend towards electric propulsion;
- the Ace by Conrad, design by m2atelier, for a simplicity that creates an essence of beauty and functionality;
- This Is It, exterior design by Tecnomar and interior design by The Italian Sea Group Centro Stile, for the originality and creativity within an unconventional form;
- the Flexplorer 146 Maverick by Cantieri delle Marche, interior design by Francesco Paszkowski & Margherita Casprini, exterior design by Hydro Tec, for a true interpretation of the explorer theme.
A special award for outstanding accomplishments as an Italian Yacht Ambassador went to Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo for enhancing the presence of Italian design in the yachting sector.

Blue Design Summit, il nuovo specchio della yachting industry
Grande successo per la prima edizione di Blue Design Summit, evento dedicato alla progettazione, alla costruzione e al refitting di superyacht. Lo dicono in primis i numeri, con 56 relatori, 70 aziende coinvolte ben 850 iscritti alle sessioni, ma il risultato positivo di aver radunato sullo stesso palco designer e cantieri artigiani e istituzioni pubbliche e accademiche. È significativo che questo sia stato possibile a La Spezia, nel Miglio Blu, il tratto di costa dove si concentrano alcuni dei nomi più importanti della cantieristica italiana, perché permette di evidenziare esperienze e i punti di forza del settore dei superyacht. “Una prima edizione di grande successo che ha coinvolto i più grandi esperti del settore in tematiche di sviluppo strategico per la Città e che conferma la centralità della Spezia nel panorama internazionale e la sua capacità di mettere a sistema le realtà produttive del territorio”, ha dichiarato Pierluigi Peracchini, Sindaco della Spezia.
Fondamentale il contributo dei progettisti italiani che si sono alternati sul palco, in un costruttivo confronto tra case history, nuovi progetti e riflessioni sui futuri trend dello yacht design, sottolineando anche l’importanza della cross-fertilization tra design nautico e architettura residenziale. Dibattiti che hanno toccato anche il tema della sostenibilità; per coincidenza, a chiusura si è svolto il varo del Sanlorenzo 50Steel, primo superyacht al mondo con un sistema Reformer Fuel Cell a metanolo verde in grado di alimentare l’apparato di hotellerie di bordo a zero emissioni. Grande partecipazione da parte dei giovani studenti che per la prima volta hanno potuto ascoltare le testimonianze di grandi designer e operatori del settore.
“Dal Blue Design Summit abbiamo imparato che fare sistema nell’industria dello yachting è possibile”, ha commentato l’Assessore Patrizia Saccone, “Lo dimostra la risposta di pubblico e l’autorevolezza dei vari interventi, tra designer e cantieri, che si sono avvicendanti nel corso dell’evento. Ma fare sistema significa anche partire dalla formazione che deve essere sempre più intersecata al tessuto imprenditoriale del territorio. Un distretto di eccellenza come quello della Spezia, rappresentato dal Miglio Blu, è in grado di generare un’economia del lavoro florido e deve anche essere capace di creare competenze e specializzazioni specifiche.”
Durante l’evento presso Villa Marigola a Lerici, sono stati proclamati i vincitori della prima edizione del Miglio Blu Design Awards alla presenza delle istituzioni del territorio, tra cui il sindaco della Spezia Pierluigi Peracchini e l’assessore Patrizia Saccone. Riconoscimenti decisi dalla giuria formata da giornalisti ed esperti del settore sono stati assegnati a:
- T52, cantiere Baglietto, exterior design Francesco Paszkowski, interior design Margherita Casprini, per l’eleganza e coerenza complessiva del progetto;
- Alchemy, cantiere Rossinavi, exterior design Vitruvius Yachts, interior design Team for Design di Enrico Gobbi, per l’eleganza delle forme esterne e interne e per l’attenzione data all’eco sostenibilità della soluzione propulsiva;
- Nilaya, del cantiere Royal Huisman, exterior & interior design di Nauta Design, per i materiali utilizzati nella realizzazione della carena e della struttura generale;
- Seadeck, dei cantieri Azimut, exterior design di Alberto Mancini e interior di Antonio Rodriguez e Matteo Thun, per la ricerca sui materiali degli arredi interni che riescono a coniugare riciclo e sostenibilità a un’estetica contemporanea;
- Bolide 80 di Victory Design, exterior design Brunello Acampora, interior design Stefano Faggioni per l’approccio senza compromessi al tema della velocità e del divertimento, restando in una prestazione litri/miglio sostenibile;
- El-Iseo, cantiere Riva e design di Officina Italiana Design di Mauro Micheli e Sergio Beretta, imbarcazione che interpreta con eleganza la moderna tendenza verso l’elettrico;
- Ace, cantiere Conrad, design m2atelier dove la semplicità inventa l’essenza della bellezza e della funzionalità;
- This Is It, exterior design Tecnomar e interior design The Italian Sea Group Centro Stile, per l’originalità e la creatività in una tipologia fuori dagli schemi;
- Flexplorer 146 Maverick, Cantieri delle Marche, interior design, Francesco Paszkowski & Margherita Casprini, exterior design Hydro Tec, per l’interpretazione concreta del tema explorer.
Un premio speciale come Italian Yacht Ambassador è stato assegnato al Cav. Massimo Perotti, Sanlorenzo Executive, per avere valorizzato la cultura del design italiano nella nautica.
